Norfolk Broads

We recently did a long weekend boating on the Norfolk Broads. As I understand it, Norfolk was a not easily habitable area, covered extensively by bogs and marshlands. The people (mainly men) here lived very solitary lives and were involved in peat mining. As the peat ran out and the mines got closer to the sea, the sea started to flow in. The mines eventually filled up with water and these created channels. These channels were called broads and became a waterway and were used to transport goods. Over time trade died out and the broads are mainly used for leisure activities. Mainly boating.
We arrived at Potter Heigham just after lunch. We had booked a 9 berth boat from a company called Herbert Woods ( http://www.waterwaysholidays.com). We were assigned a boat named Malibu Light. The boat was unfortunately very disappointing. Externally it looked fine. Internally it was tired looking. However, it was clean. The beds were freshly made, clean sheets and the floor was spotless. We loaded up the boat. One of the employees of the company came over talked us through the boat. Then he took the boat out of the yard for a little spin. He showed us what to do, gave us a map of the broads. He got off and rather gingerly we were away.
We sailed for about 3 and half hours and then found a spot to moor for the night. We moored at Salhouse Broads (fee £6 for the night). We took a short walk and then commenced cooking. We ate on the boat that night. We hunkered down for the night. The beds were reasonably comfortable. The size of the boat being what it is the beds were however very tiny and cramped but we all managed a good night’s sleep. We were all up early and shortly after 8:00 we were on the move. We picked up some friends at How Hill. We went further up the river. Due to the height of the rushes and the foliage we felt like we were in a tropical country someplace. It was very quiet and serene. We moored for lunch at Gay’s Staithe , a very beautiful location. After lunch we set sail again. However, not before we had a small mishap. Whilst checking the weed filter we managed to drop the cap into the engine compartment which was filled with water and diesel. After a futile search we called the boat engineer. He was with us within 20 minutes. He leant over the engine, fished around in the compartment and within a minute had found the cap and pot it back on. We felt sheepish! The afternoon sailing was fun. We dropped our friends off at How Hill (Fee free) again that evening. We went for a walk and then went looking for a pub. The nearest pub was about a 40 minute walk away. We decided to cook dinner on the boat again. After dinner we realised that we had run out of water on the boat. Completely! No problem surely. We were at a mooring place. However, we discovered that there was no water at this mooring place!
Next morning we woke up at the crack of dawn (6:30) we set off looking for water. Fortunately for us about half an hour down river was a place called Ludham Bridge. We moored and filled up water. It took almost an hour and a half to fill water. After breakfast we were back on the move again. We sailed down to the Southern Broads. We kept going till we were almost at Great Yarmouth from where it would have been open sea. We then turned around and late afternoon decided to moor at a pub and have lunch. After a leisurely lunch we headed back to Potter Heigham. We got there about 6:30. We unloaded the boat, packed the cars and were on the move. This was quite painless. We did not speak to or see anyone from the company. It was a bit like returning a rental car. Someone from the company checked it over later and the only addition was the cost of the fuel.
In conclusion, it was a great weekend. Great fun. I would certainly do it again but with a much better boat and somewhere different.

Toyota Prius (Hybrid)

I have owned a Toyota Prius (Hybrid) for a couple of years now. I purchased it new. After this length of time, I feel qualified to report back on this car.
I first drove this car nearly two years ago. I took over what was left over of a 6 month lease on a Prius T3. I was offered it and took it up because paying the congestion charge to drive into central London was driving me potty. What with saving the charge and the saving on petrol the car pretty much paid for itself. No Brainer!
The T3 itself is no great car. I noticed quite a few things I did not like about the car. It has a 1.5 litre engine which is sufficient for driving around town. Get it out on the motorway and it was a dog to drive. No pickup, no responsiveness whatsoever. The handling was atrocious. Sometimes going around corners I would be praying that the car would still be on the correct side of the road when I came out on the other side. Thankfully, nothing untoward happened. To be fair this is the lowest powered engine I have driven on a long term basis since passing my driving test. Maybe I have high expectations. I used to have a BMW316i (1.6 litre) which would wipe the floor with the Prius. I appreciate these are different beasts but still........
The stereo system (basic) was absolutely rubbish. I spend anywhere between two and four hours a day in the car almost seven days a week. I need to be able to listen to music at a decent standard. This system was not up to a decent standard.
On the plus side it was saving me petrol and therefore money. When driving the Audi (2.7 litre turbo) I was filling up a 66 litre tank every four days. The Prius, I was filling up a 45 litre tank every fortnight. However, I am not sure what kind of mileage other 1.5 litre engine cars give nowadays. I suspect they won’t be far short of a Prius.
Anyway three months later I took on a brand new Prius Tspirit. This car was fully loaded. I took it thinking that it had all the toys – better stereo system, satnav, Bluetooth hands free kit, intelligent park assist and a rear parking camera. I fooled myself into thinking these toys would make up for the other weaknesses of the car. At this point I was still being seduced by the cash savings.
The Tspirit was exactly the same car as the T3 in terms of driveability and technology. In another word – rubbish. The better stereo system was better than the previous one, but far worse than anything I have had in any other car at different price points. The Tspirit is not a cheap car. It retails in excess of £20,000. This puts it straight into BMW & Audi territory. The Tspirit is not close to these competitors in terms of comfort and extras. The stereo system is so bad that I have stopped listening to music in the car. I listen to talk radio and podcasts because music sounds bad in the car. That is a shame. The Bluetooth hands free kit is cumbersome to set up and is about 3 years behind in terms of usability. Voice dialling – forget it....you need to tag every single contact individually. If you have 10 contacts that is fine. With 500 contacts – no chance. The satnav wants to be my granny. It won’t let me change any route directions, options etc. unless i am at a complete standstill. That is not always possible. From a safety perspective I understand that, however, I have a passenger who can make the changes while we are moving. Then what!!! The park assist is a cute toy but it is a toy. If you try to use it on the streets of any major city, by the time you have set up the car and used it, you will have been killed by the other angry drivers around you. I do like the rear camera. This is really useful when parking and reversing into spaces. The buttons for opening and shutting windows and locking the car from the inside do not have lights or luminous paint. In the dark one is groping and hitting buttons in the hope that one will get lucky.
So you can see I am not overly enamoured with this car. There are only two things I like about the car, Fuel consumption and the rear camera. I can see this car appealing to someone who does a lot of driving in the city, going to the shops etc. Paying near enough to £20,000 just does not warrant the fuel savings. One could buy a cheaper car and god knows there are loads of those about these days, with smaller or similar sized engines and pay a little more for fuel and still have change left over from £20,000. I certainly will not be buying another one. If I could break the lease now, I would. Unfortunately, I have to hold onto this car for another year and a bit.
Funnily enough, I had a dealer calling me to ask if I wanted to test drive the new model and maybe buy it. I told the lady, it was the worst car I had the misfortune to drive and own and I would never buy another one. Stunned silence!

Twitter

As you may have noticed my blog has a feed to my twitter updates. So what is twitter, how does it work and on an on? Well here is a link which explains all http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/shane_richmond/blog/2009/01/06/twitter_a_stepbystep_guide_to_getting_started
You can also click on the title of this blog and it will take you to the link as well.
If you want to join and you want people to follow then these are a few interesting people you should follow to get started:
stephen fry : @stephenfry
philip schofield: @schofe
Lily Allen : @lilyroseallen
me: @romitbasu
The whole point of twitter is to follow people and let people follow you. So its pointless locking your messages. Leave your profile open. People may or may not decide to follow you. Don't expect celebrity's and anyone who follows over 100 people to follow you or reply to your tweets. The simple reason is they might not even see your tweet as their tweets will get updated frequently. Check out Stephen Fry's blog @ http://www.stephenfry.com/ where he discusses tweeting.
The more people you follow the chances are more people will follow you. Please put a picture of yourself up. People do want to follow a real person.
I use Tweetdeck on my windows computer and ceTwit on my windows mobile phone. On my Linux laptop at present I use the twitter website and tweetfox to follow tweets.
Finally if you want me to follow you feel free to ask me. All you need to do is follow me and let me know you read my blog and I will follow you. I am always looking for interesting people to follow.

5 SWEET POISON
SWEET POISON - A MUST READ

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach
spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major
chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much
pain.
By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was
on 24 various prescription
medications . The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her...
She was in so much pain, and so sick. She just knew she was dying. She put
her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's
name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.
She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida
(basically in a wheelchair) for March 22 nd.
On March 19, I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she
said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS. I
recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if
she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was
getting ready to crack one open that moment.
I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda!
I e-mailed her the article my friend, a lawyer, had sent. My sister called
me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped
drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She
said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot better. She told me she
was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got
home.
Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all
of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any
kind.
In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda...
and literally dying a slow and miserable death.
When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and
that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a
complete recovery.
And she is walking! No wheelchair! This article saved her life.
If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label; DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! I have
spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on
'ASPARTAME,' marketed as 'NutraSweet,' 'Equal,'and 'Spoonful.' < /B>
In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United
States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic
lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to
be rampant.
I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.
I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this
sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the
wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid,
which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic aci d is the poison found in
the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other
conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. Many people were being
diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence,
Methanol toxicity is!
Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis,
especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does
not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use;
irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a
life-threatening condition.
We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off
diet sodas.
In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms
disappear. We've seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss
improved markedly.
This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia. During a lecture, I
said, 'If you are us ing ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc) and
you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in
your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain,
unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision,
or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!'
People were jumping up during the lecture saying, 'I have some of these
symptoms. Is it reversible?'
Yes! Yes! Yes! STOP drinking
diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels! Many products are
fortified with it! This is a serious problem.
Dr. Esparto (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be
symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice, a nurse stated
that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been
diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!
Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM
(salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave
carbohydrates. It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!
These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells,
particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and
is used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.'Many products we use every
day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!
Dr. H. J.. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the 'diet
products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an
average of 19 pounds over a trial
period.
Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that some
physicians, who believed that th ey had a patient with retinopathy, in fact,
had symptoms caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame drives the blood-sugar out
of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that
aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other
amino acids necessary for a good balance...
Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the
Aspartame passes
the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain;
causing various levels of brain damage, seizures, depression, manic
depression, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and rage.
Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as
well. Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children
diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behaviour
when these chemicals have been removed from their diet. So called 'behaviour
modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed.
Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these
children were being 'poisoned' on a daily basis with the very foods that
were 'better for them than sugar.'
It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke
and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be
partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.
Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause
birth defects, i.e . mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception
and during early pregnancy. Children are especially at risk for neurological
disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners. There are many
different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures
and ot her neurological disturbances talking about a plague of neurological
diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.'
Herein lies the problem: There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame
was included 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning
its use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent
hearings,
and still nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very
deep pockets.
Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED! There are now over 5,000
products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be
thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a 'piece of the Aspartame pie.'
I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it
is.
And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes
Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the
American College of Physicians?
This has been recently exposed in the New York Times. These [organizations]
cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they
take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their
products.
Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require
label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding
pregnant women, children and infants. The bill would also institute
independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the
general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry,
neurological changes and behavioural symptoms. The bill was killed.
It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for
this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting
and uninformed public. Well, you're Informed now! YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!
As an alternative refreshment, neither milk nor water contain Aspartame, and
are both quite refreshing when chilled.

Please e-mail to your family and friends

Virus warning and scam warnings

I have lately been receiving from well meaning friends emails telling me all about computer virus' or email scams or worse - spreading untruths by email. I am starting to get hacked off by this. I am sending an email to everyone in my address book to stop sending me these emails.
My view with all of this stuff is that any email which asks to be forwarded on to everyone of your contacts is almost certainly fake. With regards to virus warnings - if you are sending me a warning about a virus chances are its already been caught by my anti virus programme. In most cases the warning has been circulating for a number of years. So the warning while being well meaning is late. If you and I are going to get a virus we are going to get it on day one before the anti virus provider has been able to write an antidote for it. The email warning is too late.
I have noticed worryingly various emails being circulated that are downright libellous. People should be careful they could end up getting sued.
Forwarding messages only clogs up my inbox and the internet. Perhaps you can check the accuracy of the email before you send it. There are loads of good sites that will check this for you.
A google search with the subject of the email is a good place to start.
Follow this up with a search on hoax slayer (http://www.hoax-slayer.com/) and or snopes (http://www.snopes.com/). You can also search symantec's website (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/) and Mcafee (http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp). Please read what they say and not what you want it to say.
If you don't want to get hit by a virus use a good antivirus software. There are plenty of free software around such as avast, avg and kaspersky. Use them with a good malware programme and you shoud be fine. If you don't have these installed then please don't send me emails and if you get a virus then you don't deserve to own a computer!!
Finally do not open a file or document from someone you don't know.
I am in a separate post going to put up information on emails that i have come across that are fake. I will keep updating as I go along.
Thanks for listening.

Jim Corbett National Park - India

Last December (ie December 2008) I was visiting India. As a part of my Father - in - law's 60th birthday celebrations we went to the Jim Corbett National Park (http://www.corbettpark.com/). The park is home to Tigers (amongst other animals) and it is about a 6 hour drive from Delhi.

We stayed in a hotel called The Tiger Camp (http://www.hoteltigercampcorbett.com/) which is in a small town called Ramnagar. The hotel resort is about a 10 minute drive from the main gate entrance to the park. The hotel itself is a very pretty place alongside the river. You can see them feeding chicken to the Mahseer fish. Amazing, I know i was gobsmacked. The rooms are reminiscent of little lodges and one gets the feeling that one is in the forest. Its all very leafy. The staff are all very friendly and nothing is a problem for them. The rooms are spacious and clean. Modern looking but with a hint of minimalist lodge if you know what I mean. I would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for accommodation in the area. I cannot remember the exact room rate but I do recall all meals being included in it. I think we paid Rs70,000 or thereabouts for three deluxe cottages for three nights, one of which was christmas ie the 25th.The food was of better than average quality and there was plenty of variety and choice in the buffet meals.

Now onto the real business. We were there hoping to see tigers' in the wild. We were also warned that we had come at the wrong time of year and that we would be lucky to see any tigers at all. Due to the weather the animals tend to go deep into the forest. In the summer they tend to come to the edge of the forest as they look further afield for food and water. The best time to see animals is from April to September we were told. True to the information we were given, we did not see any tigers. We did see fresh pug prints on the path. Being the sceptical sort I surmised those tracks were put there for the tourists.

Entry to the park is by ticket only and this is very strictly controlled. Tickets are for 2 hour slots and you have to go in with a registered guide. Do not expect to turn up at the gate and buy tickets. You have to buy your tickets in advance (at least the day before). In the peak season you may find you need to book at least a week in advance. Therefore your best bet is to tell the hotel that you want to go to the park and they will make the arrangements for you. If you decide you want to go on the spur of the moment don't let the lack of a ticket hamper you. What you can do is go to the ticket building which is in the town itself (not at the gate). There you will have to find a guide who has a pass and he will take you in. You will have to negotiate the fee with him of course for both the entrance to the park and the use of his vehicle. I would suggest you use the guide's vehicle. These are usually 6 seater open topped jeeps. Easier to spot animals and stand in than being in an enclosed vehicle and missing an animal because the rear view mirror was in the way. If all tickets are sold out don't despair. You can still find a guide who will take you in your own vehicle or his for that matter for a two hour drive along a back road to Bijrani Gate via Dhikala. This is a road through the forest and is not in the game park. However, animals don't know they are supposed to be in a park and therefore may come far enough out to this part in their search for food. If you are trying to do this on your own you can try calling Mr Lalit Pandey on +919012806213. He kept promising us pictures better than you see on Discovery if we went at the right time of year :-)

So what did we see. No Tigers. That dream will have to live on. We did see plenty of spotted deer, barking deer, langur, a wild elephant and even an eagle. I will just have to go back again.

If you do see a tiger, please let me know, better still send me a picture.

I hope you find this post useful

Retail Shopping

As you might have noticed more and more people are using the internet for shopping. The convenience of this is a great thing and I don't have anything against internet shopping per se. However, where I do have a problem (with the consumer and not the retailer) is when people walk into a retailer, they take up a salesman's time and effort leading the store to think they might make a sale, they poke and prod the product. Then they go online and buy it at a price that is £10 cheaper than the store. Is it just me who can see the immorality of this. Folks this is going to come back and bite you in the ass. Online shopping provides no further customer service. I have heard stories of people buying products online and then calling their local store on the telephone for free tech support as it were. All this is going to do is knock retailers, the bricks and mortar ones. They will close down. People will get made redundant and as a knock on effect so might you. So think about it the next time you walk in someplace where you do not intend to buy the product but you intend to find out all there is to know about the product.
I for one am certainly old skool when it comes to buying stuff, especially hifi. I want to listen to the product and decide for myself if I want to buy it. I don't want to read 3 reviews by guys who start off their review with the statement "I am a audiofile" (the grammatical and spelling error is intentional) closely followed by the statement "only a dog can hear the difference" in their review. Get over yourselves people.
This leads me on to Grahams Hifi (see link attached). I have been buying hifi from them since 1982. The customer service is excellent. Nothing is a problem for these guys and demonstrating hifi is what these guys do to make a sale and they do it very well. A bunch of friendly guys whom I cannot stop praising enough. They are also constantly having customer evenings where one gets to sit and listen and hear the latest equipment and technology. Not a hard sell in sight. Try getting this kind of service at empiredirect. ooops they have gone into administration!!!!
A couple of weeks ago, Grahams Hifi had a customer evening to demonstrate Linn digital streamers. The evening was topped off by a performance by Maeve O'Boyle (http://www.maeveoboyle.com/) who is a recent signing on the Linn records label. Picture this, you are one of about 40 people sitting in a small room and this wonderful singer is performing for you. She obviously loves singing and showcasing her work and is delighted to be there performing for us and we get to hear this fantastic performer. Cannot see that happening on ebay...can you?
Anyway what can I say about Maeve O'Boyle. She deserves to succeed. She is a talented singer, songwriter and performer, but the last time I checked you don't have to be talented to succeed. If you can get yourself onto a reality TV show...... nuff said.
Coming back to Maeve, I was lucky enough to get a 5 track sampler cd of her new forthcoming cd "All my sins" due out in June i believe. Buy this album. If you have got this far into my post I suspect you like good music and singers. You will not be disappointed. Check out her website where you can find samples of her songs
happy listening.
